Getting in and out of the Jordaan
The Jordaan has no metro stop of its own, and it hardly needs one. Trams 13 and 17 leave Centraal along the Raadhuisstraat and stop at the Westermarkt, right under the church tower, and from the station it is a fifteen minute walk into most of the quarter along the Haarlemmerstraat. By car the canals are narrow and the side streets mostly one way, which is why a companion arriving by taxi sometimes steps out on the Rozengracht or the Marnixstraat and walks the last few hundred metres. From Schiphol, count on roughly half an hour by taxi outside the rush hour.

For a walk, the Brouwersgracht at dusk is hard to beat: houseboats, low bridges and old warehouses with their hoisting beams still in place.

Canal houses here are narrow and deep, and many are split into apartments with a shared front door and a steep internal staircase. Houseboat stays are popular along the Prinsengracht and the Brouwersgracht; if you are on one, give the berth number or describe the boat, because those addresses can be confusing. And keep the neighbours in mind: people live very close together in the Jordaan, walls are old and thin, and a calm, low-key arrival is exactly how she plays it anyway.
